Industrial & IoT solution

Container management for environments that never sleep.

Air-gap capable. Offline-first. No Kubernetes knowledge required. Portainer manages containerized applications across factory floors, energy grids, and remote edge sites: safely and reliably.

The software you already run

Deploy OT software across distributed operations, at scale.

From manufacturing floors to retail locations, connected vehicles to oil fields, modern operations require specialized software: MES systems, SCADA platforms, historians, edge analytics, and vendor applications from HighByte, Fuuz, Ignition, Critical Manufacturing, and Litmus. Deploying and maintaining those systems across hundreds or thousands of distributed sites is operationally expensive and error-prone, and it requires expertise most operational teams do not have.

Manual updates mean downtime; inconsistent configurations mean operational risk; and sending specialists to every remote location is unsustainable.

Portainer is the software control plane that lets you deploy, manage, and update operational technology applications across your entire distributed network, covering factories, retail stores, vehicles, remote sites, and edge infrastructure, consistently and safely and at scale, with no deep IT skills or cloud expertise required; a single Portainer instance manages up to 150,000 edge devices, which means a national retail estate or a continent of substations is governed as one fleet rather than partitioned across management planes to fit the tooling.

Who it's built for

Three segments. One control plane.

Industrial IoT

Factories, energy, logistics, aerospace, and wastewater. OT teams with no Kubernetes experience managing ISV-supplied containerized industrial software at scale.

Enterprise IoT

Retail chains, telecom edge, smart cities, connected vehicles. Centralized fleet management at scale across thousands of geographically distributed nodes.

Remote & disconnected

Ships, oil fields, mining sites, remote infrastructure. Async edge agents that operate safely offline and sync when connectivity is restored.

Agent architecture

The right agent for every network constraint.

Portainer provides three agent types to support different network and operational constraints. Each connects to the same central control plane.

LAN agent, for trusted networks

Bi-directional, in-band communication for secure internal data centers. Lowest latency. Direct runtime access.

Bi-directionalData center

Remote agent, for untrusted networks

Outbound-only communication. No inbound firewall rules required. Optional mTLS for device identity. Reduced attack surface.

Outbound onlymTLS identity

Async edge agent, for disconnected and OT

Pull-based command execution. Offline-safe. Resilient under high latency. Queues updates until connectivity is restored.

The operator experience

Governing the edge is one side of the story. How your OT teams use it is the other.

Your IT team controls deployments, policies, and fleet governance through Portainer's operator control plane. But the people on the plant floor, at remote sites, and in the field don't need to see any of that. They need a purpose-built experience for their job.

Industrial App Portal: built for the people on the floor

The Industrial App Portal is a purpose-built interface for OT operators, technicians, and automation engineers who don't need to know Kubernetes exists. Infrastructure is abstracted entirely. They interact only with concepts that match their operational world.

All actions taken through the Industrial App Portal are governed by the policies and access controls set by your IT team in the Portainer operator control plane. OT operators can only do what they're permitted to do.

What ships today Portal in development

The App Portal is the operator-facing layer still in development. The edge governance underneath it is in Portainer Business Edition now.

  • Edge Groups. Static or dynamic groupings of edge environments; membership determines which stacks, jobs and configurations reach a device, and a device added to a group later inherits everything already assigned to it.
  • Edge Stacks. Declarative deployment of Compose or Helm workloads to a group; the server resolves the target environments, tracks per-device status, and supports staggered rollout for async devices.
  • Edge Jobs. Scripts distributed to edge devices on a cron schedule, with optional log collection returned to the server.
  • Edge Configurations. Distribution of configuration files to remote devices, either one common file to every device or a unique file per device, with the mapping and delivery handled by Portainer.
  • Waiting Room. A holding pen for newly onboarded devices, where a device sits pending until an administrator admits it into Portainer for management.
